There are a variety of different beauty courses available, catering for a whole range of learning needs. If you are looking to start your career straight out of high school, the NVQ course is a great way to train. The course will provide you with a balance of on the job training via work placements, and classroom led theory work. Level 1 takes a year to complete, and is followed up by level 2 which will make you a fully qualified beauty therapist upon completion.

If you are looking to change careers and are unable to study full time, the city and guilds evening classes will be a great way for you to become qualified. Much like the NVQ course, the structure is split between practical and theory modules and takes 6 months to 1 year to complete, depending on the amount of time you are able to commit to each week.

You can expect to earn anywhere in the region of $15-$20 per hour working in the beauty therapy industry. This figure can be increased by as much as 30% via gratuities however. Providing a high level of service and great treatment will determine how much you are able to make via tipping.
